In the exhibition Anders Ruhwald: One Thing Follows Another (And You Make It Happen), Ruhwald explores form, materiality, and perception through an installation that compares and contrasts one design rendered in three diverse media: ceramics, wood, and glass. The exhibition resulted from a collaborative artist-in-residence program at Indiana’s Ball State University co-organized by the David Owsley Museum of Art and the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass.

The Danish-born Ruhwald is best known for his ceramic forms that focus largely on the perception of the domestic object. For this exhibition he used the urn and the vase-quintessential ceramic forms-as building blocks for three monumental totemic sculptures. Initially produced in ceramic, the forms were then translated into glass and wood at the Glick Center and by Cranbrook students. Ruhwald, who is artist-in-residence and head of Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, admits he has little experience working in glass. “The concept is about translations, communications, and authorships,” Ruhwald says. “It’s about how forms make sense through various materials and through a range of people’s hands.”
