A Group Exhibition Organized by Antonio Petracca
Ah! Summer, a time for relaxation, family, friends, lawn and house repair, gardening, and of course, Adventure! An online dictionary states, “An adventure is an exciting or unusual experience. It may also be a bold, risky undertaking, with the outcome uncertain.” What if this broad definition of adventure was overlaid with a specific event? Enter L’Avventura, the 1960 groundbreaking film by Michelangelo Antonioni that helped to facilitate a change in the direction of Western filmmaking and the language of art. Artist/curator Antonio Petracca has chosen painting, sculpture, installation/video art from the gallery and invited artists that he feels embody this basic yet complicated theme.
An Antonioni obituary stated, ” the film systematically subverted the filmic codes, practices and structures in currency at its time.” Filmed in Rome, Aeolian Islands, and Sicily in 1959, L’Avventura faced difficult financial and physical conditions. The plot begins with several friends embarking on a boat trip to an uninhabitable rocky island. When the trip is cut short because of an ensuing storm, one of the women has vanished. After a frantic search, she is never found. L’Avventura continues on a debased journey with the protagonists meeting, sometimes accidentally, at unusually absurd places and circumstances.
The film is noted for its visual composition, character development and unusual narrative structure. Antonioni’s contributions have influenced a great many artists. In presenting his own filmic adventures, he has encouraged us to begin our own.
