Onishi Project presents the exhibition of the calligraphy of Tairiku Teshima. The art of calligraphy has had a rich cultural history of more than 1,400 years in Japan. However, it was only in the 1940s that one or few ideogram calligraphy (shosho or symbolic calligraphy) developed as a new art form and it first gained international recognition through the work of Yuhkei Teshima, who was designated a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government in 1982.

At the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, Yuhkei’s calligraphic work Hogyu was awarded the Highest Gold Medal at the exhibition “50 Years of Modern Art”, which included works by Picasso and Matisse.

Tairiku Teshima was born in 1947 in Tokyo, Japan. While carrying on Yuhkei’s thought and art, Tairiku has created and mastered his own unique style of shosho.

His exhibitions include both national and international solo exhibitions and juried exhibitions. He exhibited in Brazil during the Commemoration of the Centennial of Japanese Immigration and in Venezuela, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. He also exhibited at the Shanghai University Art Institute, and last year in London at the Asia House, and Paris at the UNESCO headquarters. At the opening reception of his exhibition at UNESCO, he was presented with the Gold Medal for Cultural Influence (Médaille du Rayonnement culturel) by the Renaissance Francaise. His work Kan is now part of the permanent collection of the Guimet Museum in Paris.
