This event has ended.

That’s The Neighbor, Always Dressing These Boulders In The Yard, an exhibition of paintings brought together by Torey Thornton, opens June 27th at 76 Grand Street. Here, raw application of materials foregrounds a directness of hand and spirit. As the artists dress, knead, and layer their surfaces, visceral relationships between emotion, impulse, gesture, and texture are created.

There is a shared interest in grit, speed, rhythm, and energy of all sorts. Paint, glitter, velvet, wood, glass, string – and their allusions and effects - riff off of each other. These are paintings that exist outside of post-modern complications. Without visual tricks and dry formalism, they evoke the energies specific to each artist.
