“photo with no camera”

in the canons of art making, painting was perceived as the pinnacle. generally sketching a composition precedes the subsequent layers of paint. drawing can give certitude to the vision.

in george whiteside’s photographs, drawing is the final act. the fluid, cracked, stained, and manipulated under skin, labors as the readied ground for the anticipated gesture. his calligraphy connects and underscores the haunted beauty of his deep and gorgeous surfaces. christopher wool, james nares, jackson pollock, as well as benar venet come to mind in the pantheon of this club of the spontaneous.

when grouped together in this exhibition the opus is realized and can be perceived as notes on textured greying parchment thus creating the score to his wondrous symphony. the retinal resonance is one of energy, force and harmony.
