Mixed Greens presents Party in the Bathroom, a site-specific installation by Noah Klersfeld. Video sequences of sporadically flickering bathroom tiles illuminate the window space, making it the first time moving images are used on the 26th street gallery windows.

In his recent bodies of work, Klersfeld reconfigured what he refers to as “found motion” to create new visual forms and narratives. The varying subject matter of the footage ranges from close ups of knitted pillows to bustling New York City streets. While covering a wide range of thematic differences, he approaches each piece with a similar systematic procedure. The footage is divided into modules by a geometric pattern found on the surface of what is being filmed, such as the stitches of a knit, apertures on a chain link fence or the paving sequence of tiles. The units are individually manipulated to highlight different moments in time and colors, and are then tessellated, creating the full frame of the video. Pattern becomes the framework through which Klersfeld examines and reorganizes the relationships between time and motion, surface and depth, and color and light.

Inspired by the morning hours between darkness and light, Party in the Bathroom pays close attention to the opposing lifestyles of late night revelers and early morning risers. Focusing on the bathroom as a common space between two worlds, this series of video works transforms the familiar bathroom tile patterns into spectacles of illumination. As Klersfeld films the bathrooms of family members, friends, bars, and restaurants, he flashes the lights to capture different shades and intensities in the tiles. In post-production each tile is isolated, and arranged in accordance to their state of light, creating a flickering blanket of independent agents. The scattered gleam of the neatly aligned tiles act as metaphors for the rituals and happenings in the bathroom as well as the constant transformation of the bathroom itself.
