Gordon Moore Exhibition

Betty Cuningham Gallery

This event has ended.

This will be the fourth solo exhibition for the artist at the Gallery. The current, and fourth solo exhibition at the Gallery includes seven large scale paintings (78 x 54 inches) and twelve smaller paintings (40 x 30 inches). Each painting reveals Moore’s continued concern with dimensional space and drawn space, with purposeful line and incidental mark and with visual challenges: Is it a photograph or paint? Is it collage? Although remaining true to his reduced palette, the artist introduces more color - reds, blues and greens- in his new work. Moore describes himself as an empiricist and the paintings reveal an abstract but very tangible world. There are also fourteen works on paper in this exhibition, six of which measure 40 x 27 inches and eight are 14 x 11 inches. All are ink and gouache on photo-emulsion paper. Here the tangible meets the abstract as the incidental photographs of street detritus (serrated packing foam, metal grill, etc.) converse with the drawn lines and the painted areas. Born in Cherokee, IA, Gordon Moore received his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1970 and then went on to receive his MFA from Yale University in 1972. Soon after completing his graduate studies, Moore received his first solo exhibition at Cuningham Ward in New York. He has received numerous awards and grants including the National Endowment for the Arts-Visual Artists Fellowship, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in Painting, the Adolph and Ester Gottlieb Foundation Award in Painting, the Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant.
