Works on paper in black and white inspired by daily walks along Eastern Parkway right before dusk. These images reflect the poetry of the Brooklyn sky.
The works exhibited are the fruits of a mini-marathon, which is a ritual that I undertake at the beginning of each year. The task is to create 100 images, usually completed over a three day period while working very quickly and limiting the time spent on each image to 5 to 10 minutes. These images are produced from photographs which were taken while walking along Eastern Parkway, taken at various times of the day but typically at dusk when the light that remained blended silhouettes together to create new forms.
Lourdes Bernard is a visual artist and a practicing architect who received her BA from Syracuse University School of Architecture and studied at the New York Studio School. She was recently nominated for a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship and is a recipient of a Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowship and a Vermont Studio Center Grant. She has had work exhibited at the NYSS Gallery, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Wilmer Jennings Gallery and the Courtyard Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others.
