This event has ended.

The New York Studio School presents a two person exhibition ELISA JENSEN & RUTH MILLER: PLACE AND PASSAGE. The show includes seven paintings by Jensen (oil on linen and oil on wood panel) dating from 2012 to the present, and 12 recent oil paintings by Miller along with several earlier landscapes from the late 90s.

Graham Nickson writes:
“Elisa Jensen and Ruth Miller are two painters who approach their work in different ways yet share concerns for the experience of the real, and the inherent abstract nature of the activity. Both are accomplished draftsmen and consummate painters. Rare is their sense of tonal nuance and color resonance.

Elisa paints evocative images of her city where the fast-made graffiti, and the fast-moving cell phoners, cyclists, and bike messengers are made real in the slow and resonant process of her densely painted surface of rich brick and concrete color. Her natural geometry slows the pace of her protagonists to make their presence lasting.”

Of Ruth Miller’s paintings, David Yezzi writes:
“Many of Miller’s best still-lifes defy their own purported stillness, fairly whirling about as we look on from a still point in the turning world…This is the profound mystery of her paintings: how do these mundane objects and surfaces—tables, walls, fabrics—convey energy and life to the viewer with such sprezzatura and radiance.”
