Judith Charles Gallery presents British street artist Ben Eine’s first solo show in New York City, opening February 5th. The show, entitled Heartfelt, will see a new body of work fill the gallery, together with limited edition prints.
Born in 1970, Eine is one of London’s most prolific and original street artists who specializes in the central element of all graffiti - the form of letters. He started his career over twenty five years ago as a vandal leaving his first tag all over London before eventually developing a distinct typographic style.
Eine specializes in producing huge letters on shop fronts. His bright, colorful letters have transformed streets in many cities including LA, London, Mexico City, Miami, Paris, Dublin, Tokyo, Stockholm, San Francisco and New York. He shot to international fame when David Cameron presented one of his works to President Obama as a gift on his first official state visit. But he first became known his for ‘Alphabet Street’ - the shutters and murals he painted in his trademark colors and typography on Middlesex Street in London.
In 2011 he was included in Art in the Streets at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Los Angeles, the World’s largest exhibition of Street Art to date. The same year he was also invited by Amnesty International to design their 50th anniversary poster, joining other artists such as Picasso and Miró in supporting the charity through art.
In June 2012, Eine created his largest indoor installation to date, titled ‘Communicate’. An 82 meter long statement ‘To Express Thoughts or Feelings Easily and Effectively’ painted in The Lowry Museum in Manchester.
Eine’s letters and words transgress the usual stylized image devised to depict form and emotion. Through a combination of color, placement and size they become abstract and unique works of art in their own right.
