This event has ended.

Ernesto Burgos’ second solo exhibition at Kate Werble Gallery, Monotony of Type, is comprised of a series of new sculptures that simultaneously reinforce and undo the sense of stability typically associated with formal geometry and familiar interior objects.

Burgos explores the shifting and amorphic nature of physical objects and their existence within space through these sculptures, placed on individual pedestals at varying heights throughout the gallery. Constructed using sheets of cardboard, each work is formed, recast, disassembled, reconfigured, or combined with other de-contextualized shapes to inhabit a specific situation. Chance and disparity play a prominent role as Burgos embellishes his works with gestures including painting and drawings dictated by the planes or gaps in the forms. He likens this form of randomized control to the manner in which one walks, runs or paces through buildings; materiality itself is subject to its own movement and gesture of application. There is an inherent humanism in Burgos’ deconstructions that bear traces of the artist in the form of smears, fingerprints and scattered dust.

By rearranging and playing within certain systems and formulas of construction, the works stand as a type of interruption in the chain of production and circulation of images and objects. Using the tools and language of Minimalism, architecture, and appropriation, Burgos’ work takes common forms and renders them once again uncommon.
