This event has ended.

Macyn Bolt’s “Navigating Opposites” is his fifth solo exhibition at the Kim Foster Gallery. Bolt’s new abstract paintings posit rich spatial conundrums in colorful, playful terms. By employing a full vocabulary of painterly approaches, he contrasts interior with exterior, fluid with flat, motion with stasis. The twisted geometric contortions and contradictory volumes intersect with poured and brushed fields of color, while simultaneously containing spatial tensions within their own borders. Foregrounds and backgrounds are likely to repeatedly switch identities.

Bolt’s folded, distorted shapes often speak with a sculptural voice while simultaneously affirming the two dimensional plane. Illusion is present, but is always challenged by its opposite. Finding the moment when these two polarities compliment each other establishes the work’s distinctive resonance. The multiplicity of perspective and dimensional ambiguity are visual riddles that tempt resolution. But there is no single way of reading the painting and such a reading is never the goal. Instead, his work is a vehicle that revels in the question more than the answer, an experience more than a declaration.
