sepiaEYE presents Rectangular Squares, a group exhibition featuring the work of sixteen artists whose photographic images conjure suggestion out of structure, semblance out of geometry.

Photography, despite its seemingly tenacious bond to descriptive reality, is in essence a fiction, a visual improvisation both generated and made tangible by the very borders that define it: the rectangle or the square.

The square, itself an ancient symbol of stability, terra firma, and order, is explored in this exhibition not only as a classical framing device but also as an internal vessel of content, including the ever present chaos and flotsam contained in our visual universe.
In Alex Webb’s “Ethiopia,” 1997, endless rectangular forms make up a complex composition of geometric motifs. Drawn with twin openings, a centralized window and a side door where the subject is revealed, Webb’s use of rectangles makes the eye dance and slowly reveals its secrets only upon closer examination.

Masao Yamamoto and Jungjin Lee’s works bring into play minimal compositions of rectangular forms while simultaneously, through the use of alternative printing processes, call attention to the photographic prints as themselves objects formed and bound by geometry.
