Artist Statement:
My work focuses on the linkages between nature, technology, and personal well-being, through the original use of materials used in daily life. As an immigrant, I am particularly intrigued by the ways Eastern and Western cultures use materials for joy and health. As a Buddhist, I am curious about how daily objects can be transformed and reborn into three-dimensional works.
In my Tea & Coffee series, the transformation of used Western coffee grounds and Chinese tea leaves gives the materials a second life, by allowing people to enjoy them through sight instead of taste. This project won the 2011 SMFA Traveling Fellowship. In the Meditation and Chanting series, I play with natural and manmade materials to focus on physical and spiritual health. I have combined natural ingredients from Chinese medicine and meditative chanting processes to represent the purifying the body.
