This event has ended.

Marlborough Broome Street presents Objects, a solo exhibition of Toronto based artist, Alan Belcher. This is Belcher’s first solo show in New York in seventeen years and consists of two new series of oil paintings, Corportraits and 10.5.

Corportraits depict the stock performance charts of well-known, publicly traded companies at a select period of dramatic and positive growth. As a body of work, they represent a snapshot of a diverse and successful market portfolio and are realized as oil paintings. The final images are cropped and askew, and in perspective these timelines appear frozen in a moment of frenzied and fractured activity.

10.5 are paintings of highly coveted and collectible Nike sneakers in rare colorways and limited edition brand collaborations. Like their subjects on the shoe store shelves, these oil on canvas
objects are presented in the gallery in protective shrink-wrapping. Like the sneakers, these paintings are manufactured in China. Belcher’s shoe size gives this group of works its working title.

Belcher’s critical-Pop paintings point out the ways in which the art world now so closely mirrors the fixation on brand performance, irrational exuberance and manufactured scarcity, and how outside forces can conspire to either create or destroy value within the system.

Alan Belcher (b. 1957) lives and works in Toronto, Canada. He was co-founder and co-director of Gallery Nature Morte (with artist Peter Nagy) in New York’s East Village from 1982–88. Selected solo exhibitions include The Suburban, Oak Park, Il (forthcoming); Daniel Buchholz, Cologne; Studio Guenzani, Milano; Jack Shainman, New York; The Power Plant, Toronto; Josh Baer Gallery, New York; Margo Leavin Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. In the late 80’s and 90s, Belcher was included in group exhibitions at the New Museum, NY; Paula Cooper Gallery, NY; 303 Gallery, NY; Metro Pictures, NY; “Le Courtiers du Desire”, curated by Walter Hopps and Howard Halle; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris to name a few.
