Paint,collage, three-dimensional beads: these are some of the ingredients of Fukui’s dynamic, multi-layered work. Benjamin Genocchio in the New York Times wrote: “In fact, some works are so densely layered that they are a bit like bubbling cauldrons of imagery. It is part Pop Art, part potpourri…” In this newest body of work Fukui’s signature narrative elements of cartoon, anime, and collaged images melt into the background. The new work is distinctly painterly in approach, but still riotous in the use of vibrant color and material.
