John Koos “Koos Unframed!”

Art 101

This event has ended.

These new paintings are all on paper, imbued with his unique sense of color and light — and sly humor.

“I sit and look at the paper until I know what color I want… Brushstrokes are influenced by my superficial knowledge of Chinese or Japanese calligraphy. I think about poets like Celan and Lorca and Joe Elliott, I think the multiple images from various myths crowd into my consciousness.”

Koos, a Fulbright scholar lived, worked and exhibited around the world until he landed in Brooklyn with his wife, Vivian Sauber Koos and his daughter Katherine Koos. All three are exceptional artists, long part of the fabric of their Brooklyn neighborhood.

This is the second one-man show for Koos at ART 101. Other solo exhibitions include The Whitney Museum Art Resources Center, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Elizabeth Street Gallery in NYC, Edinboro State University PA, The Evans Gallery in East Hampton, and Louisiana State University. His work is in many collections, among them The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Hampton University Museum,; Greenboro Museum, SC; and Edinboro State University, PA. His drawings are featured in “HALF GROSS” a collaboration with the poet, Joe Elliot.
