This event has ended.

The Plein-Air Painters of America is exhibiting more than 60 paintings by 30 members in the newly renovated Upper Gallery of the historic Salmagundi Club. The exhibition, which opens April 22, 2014, through May 9, 2014, comprises both plein-air paintings, as well as studio paintings inspired by field studies. Paintings are for sale throughout the event, including during the opening reception, demonstrations, and panel discussion. Capping the weekend is an opportunity to watch plein-air painters at work in Washington
Square Park.

Why Outdoors? addresses the motivations that compel artists to enjoy and endure the vagaries of the environment in order to capture its essence. According to PAPA member/artist Joe Paquet, painting on-location is a potent connection to nature that engages the artists’ senses by imposing humility, lack of control, and risk. “Through humility the universe reveals itself in a wakeful appreciation of the moment,” Paquet says. “Accessing intuition and experiencing risk leads to clarity and economy, through which the artist opens the door for a chance to experience spirit.”
