This event has ended.

Maya McCarthy is a professional screen printer working at Gowanus Print Lab. Born in DUMBO, Brooklyn in 1986 and raised in her parents’ animation studio on Water Street, she was always surrounded by artists, and had the run of their giant loft space to create. Her paintings on canvas and recycled materials, paper sculptures, prints and toys are colorful, exuberant expressions of street life and her Brooklyn roots.

The 2Cat logo character, derived from her M initial as the cat’s ears with a single all-seeing eye underneath, has become Maya’s signature, appearing as a two-headed cat in paintings, as a graphic for bands on album covers, posters and instruments, as soft toy sculptures of felt sewn with dental floss, on hand-screen printed streetwear, and as stickers popping up in unexpected places around the city.

She attended Fashion Institute of Technology, where she majored in Textile & Surface Design and Business. She participated in the Bushwick Open Studio 2012 show at The Swamp, and has had her work featured in Ouichi Gallery’s 100 Artists show and in the Mini Prints show at Gowanus Print Lab. She shows her work regularly at various art and entertainment venues in New York City.
