Recent paintings by Nikki Lind continue the artists’ investigation of the natural world. Using a poetic sensibility and at times humor, Nikki explores the changes that have occurred to these familiar landscapes of her past and the feelings of loss connected to this. Nikki has been working with the idea of nature and human impact since the 90s and more recently has been researching the psychological aspect of this change, *Solastalgia, in her current body of work. Each painting portrays a fleeting, actively deconstructing moment within the landscape as portrayed in disintegrating parts, flowing or dissolving. The figures are solid and seemingly permanent; persistent strangers in nature. They don’t seem to belong there or perhaps even know how they got there.

Nikki Lindt grew up spending large periods of time in both the Netherlands (where she was born) and rural Pittsburgh, she now lives and works in Brooklyn. Nikki received her MFA from Yale University. Among others, she was granted the Pollock Krasner Grant, the Environmental Cultural Award/Grant from the Dutch Environmental Protection Agency and the Basic Subsidy Grant from the Dutch Funding for the Arts Program. Nikki has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been in several group exhibitions at Heskin Contemporary, as well as a solo exhibition Solastalgia in 2010.
*As opposed to nostalgia—the melancholia or homesickness experienced by individuals when separated from a loved home—Solastalgia is the distress that is produced by environmental change impacting people while they are directly connected to their home environment, in effect their home leaves them.
