This event has ended.

WHIRL presents works that challenge the notion of photography as a method of representation of objects. Rather than depicting recognizable images of the architectural scenes, Saiki and Williams explore the urban cityscape of New York by fabricating its form in distorted and fragmented images. In Buildings For New York City, modern architectural buildings are dramatically twisted and folded. Saiki often presents photographs in sculptural forms, redesigning the image of the representational space and creating his own three-dimensional structure. Similarly, Williams’ The High Line Effect depicts a completely distorted, almost explosive, panorama of The High Line, the elevated parkway running directly through the gallery district in Chelsea. There is a sense of real, grounded space as well as a surreal, unconscious duality. The city itself becomes a whirling space with this dramatic transformation.
