Gideon Bok “Welcome To The Afterfuture”

This event has ended.
Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects presents an exhibition of new paintings by Gideon Bok, entitled Welcome to The Afterfuture. The title references a 2000 album by spoken word futurist Mike Ladd. Bok’s new paintings describe the interior of his studio. In 2012 he began teaching at Boston University. His B.U. studio, like Bok’s previous studios, is a tangle of extension cords, electric guitars, art books, chairs, beer bottles, bicycles, record players, styrofoam cups, audio components, ghost images of studio visitors, chairs, flowers, windows that open on blue skies and always record albums (not cds) record albums as place markers, as portals, as news broadsides (Lou Reed r.i.p.!) “What are you listening to these days?” Bob Dylan, Mike Ladd, Sparklehorse… We can read Gideon’s visionary music angels in the mix tape that are his paintings, with their complex layering of surface and touch and interior compositional rhyming. Transparent waterfalls of turped out oil paint wash over chunky impasto build-up. Gideon’s painterly attack is funky, complexly layered and completely surprising.
