This event has ended.

Powers has based all of the paintings and titles in this show on images and text found on social networks like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The work investigates how we create and display our identities online. In this digital environment, we now present our personal lives more publicly than in any other medium. Working as both author and publisher, the awareness of how we are presented to the audience is an ever-present consideration in social engagement.Since we have the control over the narrative we display, the social network medium encourages us all to build a personal brand.
Young people are now creating an online brand for themselves while in the midst of developing their own identity. They are bombarded with images of friends, strangers and celebrities, inundating them with ideas about who they should be and how they should present themselves. In this environment, they share their moments of sadness, boredom, loneliness and frustration, while simultaneously editing themselves for public viewing. They are making their brand, a promise of who they are, yet how much of what they present is really who they are?
