This event has ended.

Paper Variables is an opportunity to collect art by renowned contemporary artists at an affordable price while making an important contribution to the creation of new work in handmade paper. Paper Variables projects incorporate the unique “wet studio” processes that are available to artists at Dieu Donné. Embracing the egalitarian spirit of the traditional edition, this artist-driven series produces new works in collaboration with our studio staff, featuring unique touches of the artist’s hand. Each year, artists work in collaboration with our studio staff to create dynamic new works for this series. The subscriber price of $500 helps to support the residency and exhibition program at Dieu Donné.

Katherine Bradford was commissioned to create 25 new, unique variants collectively titled Superheroes & Divers. Working collaboratively with Studio Collaborator Amy Jacobs, the artist used pigmented pulp to translate her painting process into a new medium. The 25 individual works in the series each feature a diver or a superhero suspended mid-air with unique backgrounds.

Andy Mister creates highly detailed drawings in carbon pencil based on found, digital images from the aesthetics and artifacts surrounding music and music culture. The artist typically works on commercially produced paper as a support, but explores paper as a sculptural medium in his 2014 Paper Variables edition program. Working in collaboration with Dieu Donné Artistic Director Paul Wong, Silence (Single) is a handmade paper 7” record for the fictional band Silence of their single “Where Are We Going?” and B-side “What Are We Doing?”.

Sara Greenberger Rafferty created a variable edition of 25 that feature unique distortions of a single image. The series was created in collaboration with Studio Collaborator Lisa Switalski, using the Dieu Donné studio’s hydraulic press to transfer inkjet prints onto wet abaca paper and acetate. Each work in the edition is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by the artist.
