AIRPLANE presents a series of new site-specific installations and paintings by Brooklyn based artist Leeza Meksin. Opening concurrently with Bushwick Open Studios, Meksin will engage and transform the gallery space and the backyard with stretched planes fastened with ratchet straps, latex tubing and zip ties.

Responding directly to the site and title of the gallery AIRPLANE, the artist will bisect the space with screens and weights, using lattice fencing, fishnet, spandex and dumbbells to playfully dress-up the architectural quirks of the gallery. Organic shapes and synthetic construction materials meet with the clean lines and white walls of the gallery. For the backyard, Meksin will stretch and float high visibility fencing from the gallery to the patio and garden, blurring interior and exterior spaces.

Meksin’s installations explore the relationship between buildings, bodies and paintings, and how the conventions that govern them overlap and reinforce each other. What happens to large inanimate objects when they get dressed up in architectural drag? Meksin extends the question of gender to the straight lines, durable materials, and the rectilinear orifices of painting and architecture.

Installed with assistance from Eliza Arkin, and opening on Friday, May 30, the show will be open to the public through Bushwick Open Studios Weekend May 30-June 1, and subsequently, on Sundays from 12-6pm through July 6.

AIRPLANE will host a walk-through with the artist on Sunday June 15th from 2-5PM. Meksin will discuss the materials used in the work and her process when working with a specific site. Refreshments will be served.
