“At 18 years old while living with my brother I became inspired to try art. Working for and watching him tattoo opened up a whole new experience for me that I had never thought to try before. Being fascinated by the artistic style of life he led and connections he made with others alike as a tattooer as well as a fine artist, I became curious and drawn to the idea of making art myself. As I expressed my desire to my brother he advised me to begin by filling a sketchbook and that when ready he would teach me how to tattoo. Once I started practicing drawing I fell in love, I was hooked from then on. Pursuing my passion and love for art has truly changed my life and perspective in a great way. So this is the main inspiration for why I’ve named my show “Por la Vida y Amor” (meaning for the life and love). The body of work I’m creating is a representation of my life, culture, emotions and love of art. When viewing what artwork I’ve done for this show, I hope that others can find a personal connection or relation to the artwork or maybe just be inspired in art or in life.”

Illustrator Matt Buck presents a retrospect of cultural highlights, juxtaposing famous and infamous characters against their anachronistic counterparts. In imagining these celebrities locked in mortal combat, Matt offers a jarring critique of past and present popular culture with his tongue firmly in cheek. Despite the humor present in his exhibition, these matches serve as poignant reminders of where we stand today within the zeitgeist of celebrity culture, and to what degree it has transformed through the centuries.
-Matt Buck

Matt Buck is a freelance illustrator and fine artist hailing from Long Island. It was many moons ago when he first discovered his love for drawing. The year was 1993 and Tim Burton’s classic film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, had just been released. The young Matt was enthralled with the images that had just been forever scarred into his retinas. As soon as he got home from the theater, he immediately set about drawing as many of the characters as he could remember, as well as creating a handful of his own. He has not stopped drawing since that day.

His primary influences are N.C. Wyeth, Arthur Rackham, Dean Cornwell, Albrecht Dürer, Mike Mignola, and Frank Frazetta. Matt began his training as an artist in earnest while he was still in high school at The Stevenson Academy Of Fine Arts. There he was mentored by the renowned NASA illustrator, Attila Hejja, for 3 years.

In 2011 he graduated from the Ringling College of Art & Design with a BFA in Illustration. After nearly two years of working as a full-time commercial storyboard artist, he gave up the comfort of a steady paycheck to further his career as a fine artist/illustrator.
