RARE Gallery presents Kids These Days, Boston artist Zach Horn’s solo debut in New York. His new series of colored pencil and graphite drawings is based on absurd, bizarre, and zany thoughts that course through his mind on a daily basis. Rather than giving in to silliness, Horn treats his “ridiculous thoughts” with great patience, reverence, and control, bestowing on them much love, thus leaving the viewer enriched by having encountered them.

According to Horn, “My drawings are about my life, my memories, my messed-up psychology. I don’t plan them out. There is no order. The hardest part is not to filter. I have to trust that every stupid, off-beat, taboo idea bubbled up for a reason. I think it’s healthier for the drawings (and definitely therapeutic for me) to let it all out on the page. In the past they have called this the inner voice, the muse, the subconscious, or the lizard brain. It’s all the same thing, trusting that little goblin in my head.”
Sourcing his subject matter from within gives Horn great leeway to put every detail, every whim, every inflection to the service of the composition. Light bends, perspective warps, proportion distorts. Color becomes a plaything to amplify the intended meaning of a work. Because the artist invents everything, he can play with his tools as he chooses.

While his subject matter is highly personal, Horn views his drawings through an art-historical lens - not necessarily referencing a particular artist or work, but rather movements and styles such as the Baroque era, Romanticism, and Chinese ink landscapes. And yet because his subjects are so personally intimate, he does not give in to more “expressionistic” impulses that would result in subjugating his subject matter to a less lucid evocation.

Currently an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Horn has shown with Gallery Benoit, Boston, MA; Nave Annex, Somerville, MA; Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL; and Gibson House Museum, Boston, MA. He participated in the group exhibition, Beneath the Surface, at RARE in November 2013.
