Premium Quality features emerging artists from the BFA Sculpture Program at SUNY Purchase. With irony, the exhibition challenges the view of art as an exchangeable commodity with a singular objective outcome.
Seals of approval form part of an organized system of consumer rating and grant a sense of high standards. Stickers, stamps, and logos are often adorned with olive wreaths, crowns, stars, and a metallic gloss, promising a high quality product kept to a golden standard. The use of such lavish affects to endorse the value of a product borders on insecure. Few lack a sense of stability in our society as much as recent art school graduates first entering the professional world. As these artists export themselves from the environment of higher education into the competitive field of art, how will their work be appraised? In an attempt to validate their identities and histories through their work, their experiences are packaged, sealed, and ready to be shipped out—100% satisfaction guaranteed.
