This event has ended.

As sacred objects were once made of gold, the use of gold (both the metal and color) in art was linked to “transcendent” subject matter, leading to a belief that the metal itself had divine properties. In ancient Egypt, ownership of gold was the privilege of the Pharaohs, thereby giving gold the reputation as the “flesh of the gods.” The use of gold in art became outdated and frowned upon in the modern age. Due to its lineage to social exclusivity, gold was llinked to violence and oppression caused by greed and abuse of power. Gold in art began to be seen as needless ornamentation and religiosity, resulting in a lack of critical interest and engagement in works consisting of gold.
