VELVET-n-1. From ‘vulgur’ meaning shaggy or with hair (of common people). 2. A soft fabric, such as silk, rayon, or nylon, having a smooth, dense pile and plain underside. 3. A profit or gain beyond what is expected or due. 4. The winnings of a gambler. 5. A female name.

Miles Huston (b. 1981) received his MFA from Yale University in 2010. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, where he is co-founder of the exhibition space KNOWMOREGAMES. “Force Growth Velvet,” will include painting, sculpture, and various types of functional objects designed by the artist: visitors are encouraged to wear a fifteen-pound blanket which is a cross between Mary Temple Grandin’s Hug Box (used for calming animals before slaughter) and lead x-ray blankets used routinely in a medical context. The artist has also created a website that aggregates current, localized data including weather, tides, time, etc. which will be on view on a monitor. The website (currentcondition.org) will also be publicly accessible.
