This event has ended.

Ronin Gallery presents the works of Cyoko Tamai, the 2014 Japan Society Artist-in-Residence. We are delighted to collaborate with the Japan Society to support this innovative and important program by presenting the first American exhibition of Tamai’s art.

Her work combines unique techniques, a musical sensibility, and traditional Japanese materials, resulting in ethereal and compelling images. She uses a fine-pointed steel pen, augmented by Chinese sumi ink, to pick at the fibers of a wafer-thin, incredibly strong Japanese washi paper, made by National Living Treasure Hamada Sajio. The resulting works of art float and blur in front of the eyes, reminiscent of musical scores, lunar surfaces, and the nascent origins of organic life. She is the recipient of several grants from the Sato International Cultural Foundation and the recipient of the Ataka Award. All of the work will be on view in the gallery from August 1st to August 15th.
