This event has ended.

Jeff Bailey Gallery presents Strut, Frederick Hayes first solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring sculptures, paintings and drawings.

Hayes spent his early years as an artist in the San Francisco Bay Area, but has been living in New York since 2001. While the buildings, environments and people depicted seem like they could be from either place (or any sizable city, for that matter), Hayes says that the city where they are made “plays a major role in how they feel”. They look gritty – time has passed – but they are still standing, tough and confident. Hayes also says that he wants his work to call attention to working class neighborhoods and their inhabitants. In Strut, Hayes evokes these urban places in all their jumbled beauty.

After a stint in the Army Hayes studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco at the Luggage Store, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in “Bay Area Now 1997”, Patricia Sweetow Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the San Jose Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art; the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts; Hallwalls in Buffalo; and in New York at Number 35 Gallery, the Studio Museum in Harlem and The Drawing Center. He is a recipient of a Fleishhacker Grant. His work is included in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, The Addison Gallery of American Art, the Studio Museum and the New Museum.

Project Space: Eric Mack

In Mack’s pegboard paintings and hanging sculptures, the gesture of painting mingles with the materiality of found fabric, blankets and objects. Each element is absorbed into another, transforming the objects’ histories and meanings.

Mack graduated from The Cooper Union in 2010 and received his MFA from Yale University in 2012. His work has been exhibited in New York at the Studio Museum, Kate Werble Gallery, David Nolan Gallery, Anna Kustera Gallery, Signal Gallery (Brooklyn); and Mason Gross Galleries, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. He lives and works in New York.
