This event has ended.

Archi | Texture is an exhibit of work by Anne Finkelstein and Cora Jane Glasser, two native New Yorkers who use architecture and texture, both literally and metaphorically.

Finkelstein’s photomontages start with digital photographs. They reflect a mental landscape—the ability of the mind to hold many images simultaneously and blend them into a seamless whole. The result is a densely textured surface, which fluctuates between abstract patterns and recognizable spaces.

Glasser takes her abstract imagery from construction and demolition sites. She layers hard lines with washes of opaque and translucent paint to capture the uncertainty of theconstant change that is the texture of the city. By subverting the strong verticals and horizontals of architectural references, she conveys a sense of strength, energy and vitality, tempered with skepticism.

The connection between the two bodies of work is complex and evocative. When seen together, the similarities of color, structure and imagery are aparent, as are the differences in surface treatment, technique and approach to abstraction. The exhibit is arranged to highlight the visual relationships.
