Leica Gallery in New York

This event has ended.

This exhibition is eponymous to the original publication of Freed’s Black in White America in 1967/1968 and its reprinting by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2010. This iconic photo-essay is a seminal study of African-American lives during the civil rights era of the 60s. Black in White America is seminally reflective of Freed’s pioneer photographic efforts in the genre of socially conscious photojournalism.

Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was a member of Magnum, the author of twenty books and monographs, and one of the most respected and admired photographers of our time. In the text of our memorial retrospective for him in 2007 we wrote: “We knew him for just about 15 years and we remember his first exhibition at Leica Gallery in 1996… Throughout the years, there were constant meetings with Leonard in the gallery and at other events in the city - throughout it all, his kindly nature, his love of travel, and his interest in meeting new people never failed to impress us. When we worked with Leonard, he approached every project with enthusiasm, optimism, curiosity and joy - and it is these qualities that infused every photograph that he created. To us, in what we do, he represented, both in his own history and his work, the very highest standards of photojournalism and photography.” - Rose and Jay Deutsch / Directors
