Simon Preston presents Belle Captive, the first solo exhibition at the gallery by California-based artist Victoria Fu.

Belle Captive consists of a series of moving image installations, including video projection, 16mm film and photography. Belle Captive II (2013) is shown as a large-scale video projection comprised of appropriated generic green screen stock footage sourced from the internet. The footage is overlaid and manipulated – cropped, looped and blurred – to appear as foreground on a color-field background that is original footage shot on 16mm film. Each layer is intentionally disconnected, interrupting generic corporate images with hand gestures mimicking the swipe, tap and pinch-to-zoom effects of touch screen space.

Concealed beyond this projection is a black-and-white 16mm film titled Milk of the Eye (2012). It depicts a figure walking towards the camera through trees and grassy fields while holding a mirror at her chest. In addition to the sun’s reflection on the mirror surface, the film negative itself was exposed, further manipulating and enhancing the flaring towards the camera’s eye. Within an endlessly mirroring loop, a triangulation is formed between viewer, protagonist and artist.

Projected as fragments on the reverse wall, Belle Captive III (2013) uses cinematic movement through a set made of hand-made cutout images. Shot against a virtual green screen background, the image spills beyond the edges of the screen onto the walls and floor, expanding the projected image into three-dimensional space. Converging onto the focal point of a corner photograph, these layers juxtapose digital versus analogue, virtual versus actual. Installed together as a constellation of works, Fu’s remix interrupts linear narrative to explore our understanding of modes and the materiality of film and video.

Victoria Fu received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts; an MA in Art History from the University of Southern California; and a BFA from Stanford University. She was a participant of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Whitney Independent Study Program.
