Multifaceted. Diverse. Schizo. All these can be used to describe the work of Romanian artist Gorzo. In “NO TITLE” he continues to impress with the range and variety of his artistic output, offering a selection of new works created over the past year during his time in Brooklyn and Upstate New York.

At home working with almost any material—past projects have included everything from hand-carved fir panels to horse manure—these latest pieces recast traditional media in dramatic explorations of form and volume.

While imbued with hints of Modernism—Duchamp-Villon, Noguchi, Boccioni, and more come to mind—the forms in Gorzo’s work take on a unique impositional quality that transcends ideas of historical influences.

In short, Gorzo is an artist who defies oversimplification, who scoffs at grandiose notions of a priori truths and instead focuses on art as an active engagement with ideas—both from the perspective of the creator and the viewer.

In 2006 Gorzo was the subject of a major, one-person exhibition at the Romanian National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC) in Bucharest (Oct.-Dec. 2006). The exhibition then traveled to the Brukenthal Art Museum, Sibiu, Romania (Dec. 2006–Jan. 2007). He received a degree from the University of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Since 1999 he has shown extensively in Romania where his work has garnered extensive press coverage and a growing audience. His exhibitions have frequently generated controversy for their political and sexual subject matter and the artist’s unusually bold treatment of issues that are still considered quite controversial in Romania. His work was shown at Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest (solo show), NJ MoCA (solo show), MODEM, Mucsarnok Kunsthalle, Istanbul Biennial and in a group show at the Romanian Pavilion at Venice biennial, 49th edition.
