Crossing Art presents, On the Verge, a two ‐ person exhibit of paintings by Lizzie Scott and Patricia Satterlee. These two artists explore line and form through the manipulation of space with carefully constructed and heavily layered compositions. While stylistically different, Scott and Satterlee each intuitively blur the boundary between abstraction and representation. Their works which skillfully manipulate familiar shapes, while constructing a unique visual vocabulary solicit the audience’s interest in their varying viewpoints.

Lizzie Scott has long been inspired by her surrounding urban landscape and her paintings create environments that elicit both recognizable and strangely foreign motifs. Her current “Storefront” paintings are an elaboration of the smaller “Covered Windows” series which capitalize on the utilitarian impulse to cover a window during construction, or to stick a flyer on a bare wall or telephone pole. Throughout the city, spaces are continuously covered and uncovered, creating accidental abstractions that are as engaging as they are mundane. Scott, by collaging paper and muslin onto canvas recreates this arbitrary atmosphere through lushly textured planes of color, held in place by trompe ‐ l’oeil painted tape. The paintings, which engage in the long standing tradition of the Albertian window, collide with a modernist denial of that very window through the act of abstraction. Scott’s layers of various materials lead her to explore a democratic and non ‐ hierarchical relationship between illusionistic painting, heroic abstraction, collage, and process ‐ painting.

Patricia Satterlee examines the interactions between field and ground as a method to depict the relationships of color, form and space. In her work she abandons hierarchical systems in order to highlight objects which traditionally exist between grounded forms. Throughout her process of painting she observes familiar, yet surprising elements which often serve as the starting point for new work. In her series “Violet,” on display for the first time here at Crossing Art, Satterlee introduces the viewer to the symbiotic relationship that is field and ground. Through flatten organic designs, individualize palettes, and a sequenced rhythm of colors, Satterlee creates a dynamic interchange. These boldly graphic abstract compositions are intricately layered, and though self ‐ contained still invite the viewer to explore the space she has created.
