This event has ended.

Louis B. James presents Recent Landscapes, a solo exhibition of new sculpture, photography, and video by Canadian artist Kelly Jazvac. It will be Jazvac’s second solo exhibition at the gallery and her fourth showing in New York. Known for her seductive and strange sculptures made from advertising vinyl, Jazvac’s new work reflects a continued investigation into contested ideas of nature and waste, as seen through the construct of a landscape.

In 2013 Jazvac, alongside geologist Patricia Corcoran from the University of Western Ontario, traveled to Hawaii where they discovered a new form of stone: they called it plastiglomerate.[1] This unsettling amalgam of plastic waste in the Pacific Ocean fusing with oceanic lava rock, coral, and sediment is a scientifically recognized harbinger of the anthropocene era; a hot-button geologic term describing the present and future earth as irrevocably shaped by human activity. Jazvac presents the specimens sparely, fusing the cosmic potential of Chinese Scholar’s Rocks with the canny and knowing gesture of the Readymade. Both spectacularly aesthetic and totally banal, plastiglomerate stands as a cipher for Jazvac’s larger project, a sly acknowledgment that the natural world and the mess of cultural creation and detritus are inextricably linked in an uneasy symbiosis.

The sculptures in the exhibition comprise both vinyl from advertising signage and repurposed wallpaper made by the artist for a recent solo museum exhibition at Oakville Galleries, Ontario, furthering the potential after-life of a disposable yet indestructible material. Bucolic nature, romantic roadways, and airbrushed humans fuse together into imagistic hybrids, furthering Jazvac’s interest in the dissolution of the divide between the nature and artifice.
