Abstract, small-scale sculptures assembled from wood and other materials found in nature.
These sculptures were made from found materials, mostly scrap wood found in the park and from the lumber yard. As an artist, I am primarily a painter and am influenced by Asian philosophy. I like to make circles because they combine “everything and no-thing.” The open spaces of the sculpture are as important as the solid forms. Some sculptures are raw wood, others are painted, depending on the feelings I am trying to convey.
Fred Bendheim was born in Arizona and has lived and worked in Brooklyn since 1983. As a teenager, he apprenticed with the surrealist painter Philip Curtis. Bendheim has had numerous solo shows with works appearing in collections worldwide, and commissions including two fountain-sculptures for Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and several paintings in museums. His travels have taken him throughout the world, including artist residences in Costa Rica. Bendheim’s studio is in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and he teaches art at the Art Students League in New York City.
