The exhibition Drawing on Differance: An Ambition is part of Saul Ostrow and Lidija Slavkovic’s on-going inquiry, An Ambition, which records their ongoing discuss ions concerning the conceptua l, semiotic, psychoanalytic and philosophical issues that circumscribe her production. As such, Drawing on Difference: An Ambition extends Ostrow and Slavkovic’s inquiry concerning the conceptual and technical networks that inform images and their making within the context of contemporary artistic production. “Differance” is a word coined by Jacques Derrida to name the complex pattern of differentiation and deferral we use to negotiate between the shades of meaning that result from context. In the course of these discussions they began to identify deferral as metonymic and difference (dissimilarity) as a symptom metaphor.
