This event has ended.

ZieherSmith presents Lauren Silva’s debut solo exhibition. Painting in oil and acrylic, she alters the perception of dimension and space with a palette that erupts, perforates and unfolds, at times resembling a split prism. Whether working as large as eight feet in height or on a series of continuous smaller canvases, foreground dissipates into background by way of parti-colored emanations, a brumous density that obliterates façade and dwells in a deeper register of form, color and composition. Silva resists stylization by further varying her paint application, from thick, vegetal impasto to sprayed pigment in halos of evaporation.

The works hover between abstraction and some fantastical surreality, inviting the viewer to enter the plane and associate at will. Her crowded tableaus are at once human and floral, grand in scale and minuscule in perception, as though the artist were a delirious botanist lost in a primordial forest canopy. According to Silva, the paintings “operate to both reference the familiar and suspend recognition in the same frame. The image crops itself in an odd way, aiming to provoke a feeling of disembodiment against space. I’m interested in this displacement carrying a visual impact similar in effect to the sonic force of a curious tune clipped in pieces from the radio of a passing car.”

Lauren Silva was born in 1987 in Vallejo, California. She studied Studio Art at the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated summa cum laude in 2010. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011 and received her MFA from Columbia University’s School of the Arts in 2013. Her ceramic sculptures will be featured ZieherSmith in a group show following this exhibition. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
