This event has ended.

DCKT Contemporary presents a new installation by castaneda/reiman, cast on the ground or some surface, utilizing the artists’ shared personal collections as both material and catalyst. castaneda/reiman’s fascination with found landscapes unites with their ongoing attention to the relationship between the natural landscape and the desire for its representation within domestic spaces.

“cast on the ground or some surface” refers to both the sculptural act of casting an object as well as the properties of light and shadow. Their intersection is the starting point for the exhibition installation where the resulting works imitate one another in their materials, functions and content. Shadows take form, drywall mud acts as paint, background turns into foreground, photographs become objects, and landscapes become still lifes.

Combining sculpture, painting and photography in a sometimes fluid and often awkward translation, the installation’s source materials are found images collected by the artists over the last fifteen years. These vernacular photographs are of casually documented landscape paintings displayed on easels in the street, against wallpapered interiors, on couches in living rooms, leaning on the exteriors of houses and even in the landscape itself.

castaneda/reiman are collaborative artists who live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area. They received their MFAs from the University of California, Davis in 1994. Their work is included in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Solo exhibitions include Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville, VA) and Eli Ridgway Gallery (San Francisco). Group exhibitions include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Berkeley Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California and Seoul Museum of Art. This is their fourth solo exhibition with DCKT Contemporary.
