+81 Gallery presents Hong Kong based photographer, Wing Shya’s first solo exhibition in New York. The exhibition brings together a series of photographs from the multi-faceted career of Shya, fusing his works for Wong Kar Wai and his own projects together. Despite the variation in subject matter and the original intent of the individual pieces, the photographs sustain an unswerving aesthetic – something resembling a slightly smoky atmosphere of Hong Kong, where primary colors clash with subtle shades of pale hues. Exquisitely cinematic images seem to speak of a narrative, yet suggestively masked from completely unveiling itself – alluding to fragments of stories, just a touch out of grasp. It is as if Shya captures the air – the ambiance itself – that cannot be felt by the ordinary five senses, but we know that it is there through a different mode of sensing.

Wing Shya (1964) is a Hong Kong based photographer working in the intersection of film, fashion and art. He studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Canada, and subsequently founded the Shya-la-la Workshop in Hong Kong. Shya is the exclusive photographer and designer for Wong Kar Wai’s films, including Happy Together, In The Mood for Love, Eros and 2046. Shya’s exhibitions include a solo at the Mori Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), Chivas Studio at Watermark (Hong Kong), Ion Art (Singapore) and Ooi Botos Gallery (Wan Chai).
