This event has ended.

Fred Torres Gallery presents Cynthia Greig’s 1st solo exhibition in New York, “The Nearest Distance.” Greig’s most recent work focuses on the physical spaces intrinsic to the art world. Her elegantly minimal photographs break down the physical elements of the contemporary art gallery to its observable DNA, transforming concrete and drywall into abstracted horizons resembling vistas of varied terrain. Merging open space with closed, near with far, the artist draws attention to the language and values of modernism and exhibition display. In her video, “In Advance of an Exhibition,” Greig expands her investigation into material space and its function to examine the threshold between the studio and gallery. Both video and accompanying photographs document the artist’s transformation of her studio in Detroit into an approximate recreation of a section of Torres’ gallery in New York. An exhibition catalogue has been produced in conjunction with the exhibition, including essays by Welsh artist and curator, Peter Finnemore and Director of MOCA London, Michael Petry.
