Roxy Paine has his first solo exhibition with Marianne Boesky Gallery debuting his most recent project in the new diorama series: Checkpoint, a large-scale diorama of a TSA security checkpoint. In addition to this, Paine will present a number of life-size, carved wooden objects—highly detailed copies of industrial and machine-like tool hybrids.
Checkpoint includes meticulously crafted metal detectors, conveyor belts, and even the bins one puts their belongings in. Created in forced perspective, Checkpoint is an uncanny simulacral rendering of a liminal space, one void of the humanity and movement that is meant to temporarily fill it. With this critical distance, the space becomes an aesthetic object as well as a mental locale, subject to the viewer’s gaze and contemplation.
