This event has ended.

Louis B. James presents Off White Desert, an exhibition of new work by Nora Griffin, Ann Greene Kelly, and Matthew Kirk. With an economy of means, Griffin, Kelly and Kirk create painting and sculpture that evoke both the vast emptiness of the American West and the grittiness of quotidian urban life, as well as the language of the body and the filmic landscape of dreams.

Nora Griffin (b. 1982, NY, lives and works in NY) paints sparely abstract canvases, often employing handmade and partially finished artist frames, combining an interest in New York School painting, early and avant-garde film, and the desert landscape as experienced on a recent residency in New Mexico. She has been in two group exhibitions at Louis B. James in 2013, The White Album and Diff’rent Strokes. She is also a writer, contributing to Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, and artcritical.com. She received an MFA from Columbia University in 2011.

Ann Greene Kelly (b. 1988, NY, lives and works in NY) makes sculpture that combines natural elements – particularly carved stones – with construction materials, largely concrete and wood, and found objects made strange through deconstruction. Kelly’s sculptures are strangely human amalgamations of mops, shoes, alabaster carved to fit a hand, clay, and cement, made with an intuitive sense of the material. They manage to be both cosmic and mundane in their strange physicality. This is her first showing with Louis B. James and has recently been included in group shows at Know More Games, Brooklyn, among others.

Matthew Kirk (b. 1978, Ganado, AZ, lives and works in NY) employs basic construction materials – drywall panels, wood, and house paint—in painting and sculpture that reflect an interest in basic structures of building, the beauty of the overlooked, and a quietly fantastic relationship to his own Navajo heritage and more specifically the visual landscape of the desert reservation. He had a solo show with Louis B. James in 2012 and was included in Diff’rent Strokes in 2013. His work has been exhibited at Exit Art, New York, and he has been nominated for the Rema Hort Mann prize.
