“Awkward x 2” Exhibition

This event has ended.

Rebecca Norton and Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe started to collaborate as Awkward x 2 in the summer of 2010. The Awkward rule is that the painting isn’t finished until neither artist is sure who did what.

Awkward x 2 is concerned most of all with pleasure, as sensation and involuntary affect, with the logic of sense and the immediate, and complication, of any sort but as an experience that comes with looking. We aim for visual excitement that doesn’t come with an obligation to be serious. In a lecture at the Chicago Art Institute a couple of years ago we said: “The cartoon is a kind of eye candy and it’s also pretty complicated in its own way. And we really like cartoons.” Our work has from the start used, and been influenced by, the bright colors of the video screen, and particularly the cartoon. We think our work is also comparably concerned with fun.
Into the Arcane of Abstraction is a show of six gouaches made over the past six months, accompanied by a catalog in which we’ve reprinted, with some small changes, the blog essays we published at the same time. Now one long essay, it contains the thinking that accompanies this work.
