On Stellar Rays presents Rochelle Feinstein’s exhibition Love Vibe. The exhibition will present a singular painting installation comprised of six large-scale works on canvas, begun in 2000 and completed in 2014.
The work originated as a reflection on the accumulation of knowledge of the formulation of taste, and the declarations of value through a codified language. Each work presents visual variations of the expression “Love your work,” an on-demand, widely circulated catchphrase frequently used, and heard, by artists. The phrase could veil a number of meanings; have no meaning; be sincere; or tacitly acknowledge that one’s true perceptions remain concealed under the veil of a platitude. The immersive installation situates the viewer within the environment of the paintings and the text, employing perspectival play and breaks from the expected use of speech.
Like Feinstein’s other bodies of work — such as The Estate Of Rochelle F., The Abramovic Method, The Wonderfuls, and I made a terrible mistake — Love Vibe transcodes an often perplexing and repetitive lexicon of social codes into visual form. The clever visual response to certain pervasive parlances further upends the social aspect of looking and talking about art within Feinstein’s own body of work.
Feinstein’s work is included in the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2014). Upcoming solo exhibitions include Circus Gallery, Berlin and a solo retrospective at Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland (2015). On Stellar Rays presented solo exhibitions with Rochelle Feinstein in 2013 and 2011, and other recent solo exhibitions include Higher Pictures, New York, NY (2013); LAB Space/Art Production Fund, New York, NY (2009); Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY (2008); The Suburban, Chicago, IL (2008). Awards and grants include The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship, an American Academy of Arts and Letters purchase prize, Anonymous Was A Woman grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship, a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant.
Feinstein received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1975 and an MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1978. She was appointed to the Yale University/School of Art faculty in 1994 where she is currently professor and Director of Graduate Studies of painting and printmaking. Her work is in numerous prominent museum and private collections including the Pérez Art Museum Miami and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
