The hand of sculptors will be evident at the Contemporary Art Fair NYC, May 8-May 11, 2014, in Chelsea, where you’d expect to see it in the work of sculptors such as Susan Madacsi and Michael Alfano and also in the fine furniture and jewelry of some exhibitors. Madacsi will exhibit forged and fabricated steel pieces colored by aerosol enamel paints. Michael Alfano’s limited edition clay sculptures are cast in bronze.
The skill and perspective of a sculptor is evident in furniture maker Kino Guerin’s benches, that he calls “Knotted Table” and “Why Not;” and in Beverly Tadeu’s intricately soldered jewelry of forged and formed 18 karat gold, silver and metal, illustrated by “Rooted Hoops” earrings. “We showcase masters of functional and fine art,” said Richard Rothbard who, with his wife Joanna Rothbard, founded and produces the art fair that in its fifth year runs concurrent with Frieze New York and some 10 other satellite art events. “At the highest level of artisanship the synergy between them is remarkable. I’ve seen necklaces reminiscent of Madacsi’s sculptures,” he observed. “At the art fair we acknowledge the work of fine artists, sculptors and photographers as well as glassmakers, cabinet makers, innovative jewelers, weavers, and others. Mastery of their area of expertise unites them.”
