In advance of our solo presentation of David Smith at Frieze Masters in London next month, we are pleased to invite you to an exclusive preview in New York. Working closely with the Estate of the artist, we have assembled a select group of Smith’s Forgings, in conversation with sculptures and drawings of the same period that are equally united in their formal qualities and diverse in their mediums.
Executed in 1955, the Forgings marked Smith’s first use of the industrial power forge, which he employed to bend, cut, and join raw steel bars into dramatically spare, totem-like forms. Throughout the late 50s and early 60s, Smith continued to explore the expressive possibilities of line with an emphasis on the vertical axis across a wide range of materials, including bronze, painted steel, and found objects. These efforts resulted in surrealist human figures, machine-like assemblages and elegantly abstract works on paper, examples of which have been brought into dialogue with one another here.
